Watched Barbie tonight and loved it!!!
I watched Flight Plan with Jodi Foster recently and enjoyed it.
Currently binging Frasier though - such a classic TV show and makes me laugh out loud

Hi ladies, many of you will be aware that when you reach Beauty Loop 'Level 3' at Mecca you can receive a 60 minute complimentary makeup application. I have been looking forward to it ever since I hit level 3 last October, but throughout this past year I have searched and searched for a time slot in Wellington to book my service but nothing has been available. Not even on weekdays. I'm so disappointed, because for the remaining 8 weeks of my level 3 status LITERALLY every single day is booked out.
Has anyone else had this experience? Should I have know better? Or have you had a great experience with these makeup applications?

Update: I have been using Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser which has calmed a lot of the irritation. Acne makes me feel dirty (even though I know I'm not!) so I was scrubbing away at my face and using harsh cleansers. This probably led to a continuing cycle of irritation and inflammation.
My doctor prescribed Differin Gel (retinol). The many online blogs/videos/clinical info sheets all say retinol will make the skin worse before it gets better. Hopefully it will give some eventual relief, but I'm sad I couldn't find a way to balance things out myself. The post-acne scars and hyperpigmentation are already very evident, so I have accepted that this is just my new face now.

After 10 years on the pill, I decided to stop taking it in December 2021. For the first time in my life I now have deep cystic acne along my jaw, neck and chin. It is painful to touch, feels hot and inflamed and is bright red.
I knew this was a potential outcome of stopping the pill, but has anyone experienced this? How did you cope and/or cure your acne? I know there are no miracle cures, but I would really love to hear other people's experiences <3

You guys are so kind arranging a vault during an already hectic time of year xx
on another note, I usually receive an email to say vault items have been shipped... didn't get one this time, so is there a way I can check if my order is on it's way? (Mostly I'm just paranoid about someone stealing it from the front door lol)

EYELINER. A single stroke of black eyeliner under my lower lashes. I was totally emo haha.
Then there were the Chi Chi fragrances with shimmer in them.
Next came Dove's gradual tanning moisturiser.
I would always wander around Farmers looking at all the pretty things that I didn't know how to use, and couldn't afford. It must have really annoyed the lovely ladies working there!

I'm sure we've all been enjoying shopping in its various forms lately. I'm currently in need of haircare I usually purchase from the site Look Fantastic, and have found some great products listed for $0.02
Yes, that's correct. 2 cents.
Do I add to cart and hope that this obvious glitch in the website will not backfire on me? Or do I avoid the risk altogether?

In terms of 'drug store' brands, L'Oreal and Maybelline are the ones I gravitate to (and now Essence and Wet n Wild since they have become readily available in NZ). Revlon, Rimmel and Covergirl have often disappointed me. So what an exciting trial to see two of the global makeup heavy weights battling it out!
I religiously wear sunscreen on my face and body, but always end up with bright red painful burn on the top of my head where my hair naturally parts. Here is the dilemma...
1) a hat is the obvious solution, but sometimes it will just totally cramp your style and ruin a great hairdo
2) I often will put a dab of sunblock along the part in my hair, but again it can ruin the look of a good hairstyle, and you don't want greasy stuff sitting in your hair all the time.
Any other suggestions? Is there some kind of magical hair-friendly product that will keep me covered this summer?

This is the eternal skin care question!
I've been loving my K-beauty finds, especially Cosrx. Not super cheap (about $30 for a tub of moisturiser) but certainly cheaper than Khiel's.
My issue with a lot of truly cheap brands is that they are full of sensitising fragrance. L'Oréal and Nivea seem to work well, but do I really need to rub perfume onto my face day and night?

My mind immediately went to the cult classic - Urban Decay's All Nighter Setting Spray. But looking at the ingredients, it does contain denatured alcohol. If denatured still works for you, then I really can't recommend it enough. I am absolutely devoted to this stuff!
If you have a Mecca store near you then the lovely ladies there will happily help you test it out. Otherwise you can buy a travel size for $26 which will give you 30ml.

For everyone that has commented saying they use IPL... I have very sporadically been using my Homedics IPL device for 18 months and noticed little difference. How often do you ladies do IPL treatments? I was told to avoid it in summer when your skin has tanned in the sun or you have been using fake tan, so maybe the fact that I don't IPl for about 4 months over summertime is what has lessened the effectiveness.
I got the face cream today. Some of the ingredients are very good for skin - even if they sound like scary chemicals. Niacinimide, licorice root, hylauronic acid, glycerin, dimethicone... these are effective for a number of skin concerns. I am wanting to correct rosacea, so we'll see if there are any good results.
I was dermaneedling my stretch marks just last night!!
I love love love my dermaneedle device on my face. It has 100% success every time I use it. As for my biggest concern - stretch marks on thighs and butt - I'm much like Marcel and have tried a multitude of products. At the moment my focus is on using the dermaneedle and massaging restorative oils into the skin.
It will be a long game - I don't expect to see true results for a few months. But I'm really trying to accept that my growth stretch marks are just part of me so I need to embrace them. If all else fails, a good fake tan can usually help to cover them up.

I highly recommend Wellington Apothecary shampoo bars. I have very sensitive scalp, and their Shampoo Smoothie worked so well that I will certainly be repurchasing. It lasted a super long time. The only down side is that although it is great on my scalp, it does strip the hair quite a bit, so might not work on coloured hair.
One of my close friends starts chemo for breast cancer next week. She has had waist-length hair and lush long eyelashes her entire life. Even though she is staying brave in the face of this new treatment, she is also honest about how devastating it will be to lose the things that make her feel beautiful.
I want to give her a care package of products that will boost her confidence. I'm thinking brow pencils, false lashes, bright lipstick. Does anyone have suggestions? I really have no experience in this area as it is my first friend to be undergoing chemotherapy.

I keep the lavender spray in the fridge. Perfect when you've been working all day and want a quick refresh before heading out in the evening and don't have time to completely cleanse and apply new makeup.
I also use the glycolic acid toner - both on my face and on skin areas that have recently been waxed to prevent ingrown hairs.
I love that MB products are simple to use and at a fair price.

Soozie Wong I am impressed!
I always cleanse in the evening, and use my beloved St Ives Apricot Kernel Exfoliating Scrub 2 times a week. Then I'll alternate between a Mario Badescu facial spray and the Mario Badescu glycolic toner. I'm currently using Biotherm eye cream and Sukin Age Proof moisturiser. I've been given some sheet masks from a Korean friend, so used one tonight as well. I also put vaseline on my lips and castor oil on my eye lashes.

I've been purchasing some beautiful homemade skin and hair care from small NZ brands. They are basically products made in a garage or kitchen by hand and only sold online or at school fairs. They aren't available for review on BR, so I wanted to share some of my finds...
Gorgeous and Green - a Porirua based woman who makes luscious coffee scrub and body butter. If you love deep rich scents of vanilla, cocoa and coffee, I highly recommend looking it up online. Seriously delicious!
Natural Goddess - a woman based in Christchurch who imports quality oils and makes soaps, lotions etc. My favourite product is called 'Sun-n-Shine.' It is a natural gradual lightening spray for hair. I've been using it for a month now and it has not damaged my hair AT ALL and it really works. I love that you can gently lighten your hair, meaning you can choose how light you want to go.
Savvy Touch - I have just purchased a great zinc sunscreen from this brand which originally started making products for horses! It still has a few chemical ingredients that I generally might try and avoid, but you receive a generous 250ml bottle and the consistency of the product is fantastic. It can easily be used under makeup with no need for a primer.
Please do share you favourite handmade NZ products! I love supporting small businesses - especially mums working from home, doing something they love :-)

Slightly different to LED treatments for skin concerns, but I have a Homedics IPL hair removal appliance which I've been using for about a year. It works by damaging the hair follicle, meaning that hair growth is slowed and sometimes stopped all together. I've had moderate success with it.
Definitely looking forward to seeing what light technology will do in the near future!

I tried Makeup Revolution for the first time in 2018 after it was introduced at Farmers. I am seriously impressed with their eyeshadows and highlighter! Looking forward to trying more from their range.
I also found a deep red lipstick by NYX (I think it's called 'Hollywood) that works perfectly on my skin tone.
Basically, 2018 was a year for finding affordable makeup for me!

Loving reading all of these interesting comments!
Best - Mecca 'To Save Face' SPF 50. Moisturising, great as a primer, and of course it has a high SPF content. I also love Natio's 'Ageless' SPF 30 day moisturiser. Basically, I'm determined to include sun protection as a more consistent part of my routine.
Worst - I trialled the Estee Lauder pomegranate 'Radiant Energy' duo through BR and was thoroughly confused and disappointed. They didn't really achieve anything for me, which is such a shame because Estee Lauder are generally one of my fave brands.

Hi Head Pixie, just a quick question...
Over the last few months I've intermitently sent through 3 different messages via the site contact form requesting products to be added to the database for reviewing, including NZ brands such as Antipodes and Herb Farm. The products I requested still haven't been added to BR... Are product requests just not being received when sent through the contact form? Or is there a reason that some products might not be added to BR? (all the products I requested are still current lines available in stores).
Thanks for your help!

I also get milia around my eyes! I had a couple of obvious ones for years and years right on my eyes, and I eventually got them removed by a dermatologist. I've tried removing others myself with a needle but can't make it work for me.
These skin imperfections are super annoying, but I often wonder if other people actually notice them, or if us poor ladies are prone to noticing all the icky parts of our bodies. Either way, I will definitely still continue the race for glowing healthy skin!

I am really disappointed that Farmers changed their club points system though. It now is pretty much impossible for me to receive a $20 voucher through club points using their system. Instead I use the Life Pharmacy 'Living Rewards' program which I'm happy with - especially since you get points for prescriptions too!
Ladies. I was in such a rush for work this morning I smooshed grey eyeshadow all over my lids in a patchy, 13-year-old-tries-makeup-for-the-first-time fashion. Didn't check myself in the mirror and rushed into a meeting looking like I'm bringing back the gothic look. SO EMBARASSING.
I have had face to face meetings with people with flaked mascara that has fallen on my cheeks, and black mascara smudges under my eyes. I once spent an entire morning thinking my powder foundation was looking super smooth, but actually I had not blended it properly at all and had an obvious line of makeup which stopped abruptly at my chin. I've had my hair flying around across my face in the wind which gets stuck in my lipstick and then smears lippy across my cheeks.
Please do tell me your worst makeup fails so I know I'm not alone!

Soozie is right that semi won't lighten hair, so you'll have to go darker! I have used the L'Oreal casting creme and I really love it. In Autumn I'm planning to dye my hair chocolate brown using that product.
I know Garnier does an ammonia-free range. It is permanent colour, but without ammonia it will be less harsh on your hair. That could be a potential option?

I only ever buy new products if I have read positive reviews on BR! I must look super suspicious in Farmers as I roam around looking on my phone to read BR reviews before actually buying anything haha.
Great to hear that the Ordinary is an effective brand. I haven't tried any of their products, but I am definitely curious.

I was recently sent the L'Oreal Midnight Cream, and I must say, it has become an essential part of my nighttime skincare routine. This luxurious cream is specifically formulated to work its magic while you sleep, providing intense nourishment and restoration for a radiant complexion.
It has a rich and velvety texture. The cream glides smoothly onto the skin, it feels indulgent and luxurious, making the application process a delightful experience. Despite its rich consistency, it doesn't feel heavy or greasy on the skin, which is a definite plus.
The L'Oreal Midnight Cream has helped to improve the texture of my skin. It has a smoothing effect, reducing the appearance of fine lines and unevenness. When I wake up in the morning, my skin feels refreshed and rejuvenated, as if it has undergone a mini spa treatment overnight. This cream truly delivers on its promise of restoring and revitalizing the complexion.
One minor drawback of this product is the fragrance. While it has a pleasant scent that many people may enjoy, it might be a bit overpowering for those with sensitivity to fragrance. However, the fragrance dissipates quickly after application, so it didn't bother me personally.
In terms of packaging, the L'Oreal Midnight Cream comes in a sleek and sturdy jar. The packaging is aesthetically pleasing and functional, allowing for easy access to the cream. However, I would have preferred a pump or tube packaging to minimize exposure to air and maintain the product's freshness, but it does look lovely.
I love the Midnight Serum, these two together are a powerhouse!
Overall, the L'Oreal Midnight Cream has impressed me with its ability to nourish and restore my skin while I sleep. Its rich texture, hydrating properties, and ability to revitalize the complexion make it a reliable choice for those seeking a radiant and well-rested look. If you're in search of a nighttime cream that provides intense moisturization and a rejuvenated glow, the L'Oreal Midnight Cream is definitely worth considering.
After hearing so many great things about this foundation I decided to give it a go. $13 for a foundation is so awesome, but to be honest I didn't have high hopes at first. I don't really love the little applicator wand, I don't use it at all.
It comes in a sturdy glass bottle, I got the lightest shade and find it is not a bad match for my fair skin. I have dry skin and if I don't exfoliate first and prep my skin well it definitely clings to my dry patches.
It is nice and lightweight and does not cake on me, it lasts all day on me and doesn't oxidize at all. It looks pretty good at the end of the day, I really hate having to touch up my foundation during the day so I generally never do this. It does however have an odd paint smell, it doesn't hang around long but I find it unpleasant.
Photo wise it is pretty great, I don't take a lot of pics but on a girls night out I wore this and the pics looked really great! So a definite thumbs up for that. I do really like this foundation but think my skin may be too dry so really need a hydrating foundation. Definitely give it a go and see if it suits your skin.
I got my hands on a black version of this when I purchased Kat Von D's foundation and was really excited to try it!
I used this until the day it died and I mean, died died! I really loved this, and I thought "how hard can it be to make a sponge" and I purchased another brand which was terrible!
The Beautyblender definitely has the right consistency to work well with all types of foundation, concealer and powders, my only downfall is the price of it—it's just so expensive! I'm not sure if I'll repurchase it, I think I'll keep trying my luck to find a dupe that works for me.
I was skeptical when I was introduced to this product. I thought how can an oil be so protective from the sun? But I was pleasantly surprised! Not only is it a great sun screen it provides all day moisture, with a glow to my skin I get compliments for. It’s perfect for all skin types. Even my daughter with chronic eczema uses it.
Tips: Let it soak in well before applying make up.
This amazingly beautiful goodie bag got gifted to me right before I was going for a travel. I would say it's a perfect gift for any occasion or can be used as a beauty treat for your own self if someone likes to try the mini sizes before buying the full product. I greatly like this concept of Oasis Beauty Skin Care Goodie Bag to try their skin care range. Plus the cute bag is additional benefit which I use to keep my make up products in the hand bag. I like the full skin care range of Oasis Beauty specially the Sun screens and Apple a Day moisturiser. It is such an awesome way to try 8 skin care products at a reasonable cost.
I'd always been a petroleum jelly user but it could never save my lips from the dry weather here in NZ. I've tried other brands but they never worked out - Burt's Bees gave me allergies, and most other brands I tried left a thick layer of balm on my lips that didn't feel too natural. I only tried the Hurraw! lip balm after it was recommended by my sister and I have to say it really worked like magic. The dry patches were gone the next day! I've been using it ever since to keep my lips hydrated and prevent any dry patches. This is particularly important as I wear liquid lippies most of the time.
I use the unscented lip balm in the morning and the blue chamomile vanilla moon balm in the evening. I've kept this regimen for half a year now and have had no problems whatsoever. The evening balm has a light vanilla smell which I really love as my nose is quite sensitive with strong scents. It absorbs really well in the lips - doesn't take more than a few minutes - so you're not left feeling really greasy at night or having troubles applying lipstick in the morning. This regimen works well even with my regular use of liquid lipsticks.
I'm so happy I discovered this product. I will definitely keep repurchasing!
Confession time! I love matte lipsticks mainly because... i’m lazy! I can’t be bothered doing the top up every 5 minutes so me and gloss just don’t talk at all.
Trouble is with many liquid lip paints/sticks you get that ‘bah bah bah’ feeling when you rub your lips together, you know when they’re super dry (a bit like the roof of your mouth the next morning after too much wine!), so I set out to give this baby the ‘bah bah’ test.
I chose the colour “dreamer” which is a lovely nude pinky shade. The product has a sponge applicator which I liked (rather than a brush) and one dip gave good coverage and it went on really easily.
It dries in about 60 seconds and, here’s the crunch... (wait for it), it literally didn’t come off for 8 hours! I am NOT kidding you! No fade from the edge of your lips leaving you with a bath like ring around your mouth. I gymed, it lunched it, and drank coke’d it and it didn’t budge much from the initial application!!
What is this witchery?
And did it pass the ‘bah bah bah’ test? (Actually i’ve got it on as i’m reviewing it). You betcha it did! So it’s a big fat 5 from me!
Tips: Go get yourself one! Actually two!! I'm off to check out the other colours!
I am light/fair skinned, it is usually dry and I get occasional dry and flaky patches.
I got the colour 202 Creamy Natural and although it was the best colour match (after checking out the colour range at Farmers), I found that this shade looked slightly grey after applying it on to my face. However, after applying concealer and bronzer, the greyness was less noticeable.
The formula was very runny and blended well into my skin. The packaging recommends using a rolling motion so I tried using my fingers, and a damp beauty blender and found that a damp beauty blender worked the best for me as it gave the most natural and even finish and also dries to the touch. The coverage is buildable but I'd say more towards the light end.
On the skin, the foundation felt very light, which I really liked. The finish to look quite dewy and natural. It isn't quite highlighter-level glow but nice for everyday use. I found that because my skin can be quite dry, I could get away with not using a setting powder and/or setting spray but using them helped a the foundation last a bit longer throughout the day. I can't be sure if it would last 24 hours, but for a normal 8-10 hour day, it held up for me.
In terms of its hydrating effect, I still found that I preferred to wear a light moisturiser underneath. I had a dry patch on my cheek while testing this and I was very impressed that it did not emphasise the flakiness, especially after applying and setting my make up. At the end of my day, the area did start to get a little dry but overall, I couldn't really tell. I also haven't had any issues with breakouts so far.
The packaging nice and simple, the bottle is nice and slim. The bottle says to shake well but because the formula is so runny, it does tend to leak out into the lid - regardless of whether it is shaken or not, so that when you open the lid the end is is covered in foundation. This means it can be a little messy if left on the table with the lid off.
Tips: Using a damp beauty blender and a rolling/dabbing motion helps when trying to build up coverage.
The title says it all really. I trialled L'Oreal Paris Infallible Pro-Glow Foundation for a week now. It certainly is lightweight in that it is very runny and I really wondered how long a tube would last. Not a good sign, as this foundation is well over my normal budget. I found that my skin dried out when using this foundation. Considering the product claims to hydrate and is for normal to dry skin, I couldn't work out why this could be. Maybe it wasn't a thick enough coverage? Tick that it has a spf component. But I will not purchasing.
Tips: See if you can it on sale price
This LA Girl concealer isn't a bad product but it's far from my favourite.
On the good side, it comes in a range of shades, it's really cheap and it's quite bendable.
A strange thing about it is the brush it comes with. It seems really weird so the first time I bought it i pulled the brush out but was also a bit weird because the opening of the tube is so wide. With the second tube I had I left the brush on. I actually got used to the brush and now I don't mind it.
On the downside I find that this settles in my fine lines and creases under my eyes. I put it on and set it with powder but if I come back 10 mins later it's all caked in lines under my eyes. I ensure I don't use too much, only a bit at a time so I don't think it's my technique. I'm just not totally happy with it.
Still a good product for the cost, it's worth giving it a try.
Tips: Be patient with the brush applicator. It's weird at the start and takes a bit of getting used to but I don't mind it now!
